5-Day Eastern Victoria Harley Road Trip
The route gives you a great mix of Gippsland countryside, the Great Alpine Road, High Country riding, Buchan, the Gippsland Lakes, East Gippsland coast and Walhalla. The Great Alpine Road is particularly well suited to this sort of trip
Start/Finish: Pakenham, Victoria
Duration: 5 days / 4 nights
Direction: East Gippsland → High Country → Coast → West Gippsland → Pakenham
Best suited to: Harley-Davidson and touring motorcycles
Road style: Sealed roads, sweeping bends, mountain roads and coastal riding
Day 1 – Pakenham → Bairnsdale
Approx. riding: 250–300 km depending on detours
I’d start early from Pakenham and head east through Gippsland rather than taking the quickest highway route.
Suggested route:
Pakenham → Warragul → Drouin → Trafalgar → Rosedale → Sale → Stratford → Bairnsdale
Scenic stops
Gippsland countryside
Once you’re east of Warragul, the scenery changes dramatically. Rolling farmland, forests and country towns make for a relaxed opening day.
Sale
A good place for fuel, coffee and a break.
Stratford
Stop for lunch or a coffee before continuing towards Bairnsdale.
Howitt Park, Bairnsdale
A pleasant place to stretch your legs beside the Mitchell River.

Day 2 – Bairnsdale → Omeo
This is where the ride really starts getting interesting.
Suggested route: Bairnsdale → Bruthen → Ensay → Swifts Creek → Omeo
The Bairnsdale-to-Omeo section is approximately 124 km by road, and the Great Alpine Road provides some excellent mountain riding.
Scenic stops
Bruthen
A great little country town for a morning coffee and leg stretch.
You can also explore part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail.
Ensay
Continue through the beautiful Tambo Valley. This is one of those stretches where I’d recommend taking your time rather than worrying about kilometres.
Swifts Creek
Another excellent stop for fuel and refreshments.
Omeo
Arrive in Omeo during the afternoon and explore the historic township.
The surrounding High Country makes Omeo an excellent overnight base.
Optional ride
If you’ve arrived early enough, take a short ride around the Omeo Valley before settling in for the evening.

Day 3 – Omeo → Buchan → Lakes Entrance
This could be one of the highlights of the entire trip.
Route: Omeo → Benambra/High Country option → Buchan → Nowa Nowa → Lakes Entrance
The direct Omeo-to-Buchan road journey is roughly 101 km, although your exact route and detours will change the distance considerably.
Scenic stop – Buchan
Buchan is a fantastic motorcycle destination because you’re moving from alpine country into the limestone landscapes of East Gippsland.
Buchan Caves Reserve
Definitely allow time here.
The Buchan Caves are part of one of East Gippsland’s major attractions, with guided tours through the Royal and Fairy Caves.
Have lunch in Buchan before continuing towards the coast.
Nowa Nowa
Stop here for a break before making your way towards Lakes Entrance.
Lakes Entrance
The scenery changes again as you reach the Gippsland Lakes.
I’d recommend riding along the waterfront and crossing the Lakes Entrance footbridge area before finding your accommodation.

Day 4 – Lakes Entrance → Cape Conran → Orbost
Today is your East Gippsland coastal day.
Route: Lakes Entrance → Lake Tyers → Nowa Nowa → Marlo → Cape Conran → Orbost
Rather than simply following the Princes Highway, take the coastal detours where conditions and time allow.
Lake Tyers
This is a beautiful first stop of the morning.
The road between Orbost and Lakes Entrance includes access to Lake Tyers Beach, Red Bluff and Beacon Hill Lookout, all worthwhile stops for riders.
Marlo
Continue towards Marlo and stop where the Snowy River meets the sea.
It’s a spectacular part of East Gippsland.
Cape Conran Coastal Park
This is the big scenic stop for the day.
Cape Conran combines coastal forest, beaches, rocky headlands and spectacular ocean views. Visit East Gippsland describes it as an area of rugged coastline and sweeping beaches.
From Lakes Entrance to Cape Conran is approximately 103 km by road.
After exploring Cape Conran, ride back towards Orbost.

Day 5 – Orbost → Walhalla → Pakenham
This is your big final riding day.
Rather than simply heading straight back to Melbourne, I’d finish the trip with a run through West Gippsland and historic Walhalla.
Suggested route Orbost → Bairnsdale → Sale/Traralgon area → Tyers → Rawson → Walhalla → Moe → Pakenham
The Orbost-to-Walhalla driving distance is approximately 220 km, taking around 3½ hours without sightseeing stops.
Walhalla
Make Walhalla your major afternoon destination.
This historic gold-mining township is tucked into the mountains and is a fantastic place to finish the riding adventure.
Take time to walk through the historic township, grab lunch or coffee and explore the old goldfields atm

You don’t need to stay here, but it’s a good landmark for your itinerary.
Then continue: Walhalla → Moe → Trafalgar → Warragul → Drouin → Pakenham And you’re home.

A couple of important riding notes
Because this route includes High Country and more isolated roads, I’d check Vic Traffic road conditions, weather, fuel availability and any seasonal road closures before leaving, particularly around the Omeo/High Country sections. Mountain weather can change quickly.
I’d also avoid trying to cram every scenic stop into the itinerary. The whole point of a Blue Sky Riding road trip is the ride itself. Give yourself plenty of time to stop, take photographs, have a coffee and enjoy the roads.
